Spain and Senegal Upgrade to Strategic Partnership with Fisheries Focus

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez received Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye at Moncloa Palace, elevating bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership. The meeting emphasized cooperation in multiple sectors, with particular attention to fisheries—a critical area given Senegal’s significant marine resources and Spain’s extensive fishing fleet operating in West African waters. Spain is one of the main foreign investors in Senegal’s fishing industry, and the upgraded partnership framework is expected to strengthen sustainable fisheries management, combat illegal fishing, and promote economic development in the sector. The agreement reflects growing European-African cooperation on maritime resource governance and food security. Both leaders highlighted mutual interests in climate change adaptation, renewable energy, and migration management alongside fisheries cooperation.
