Japan pushes for saury quota cuts at North Pacific fisheries meeting

Japan is pushing for significant quota cuts on Pacific saury at the North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC) meeting, citing critically low resource levels. Norikazu Suzuki, Japan’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, announced that Tokyo aims to secure substantial reductions in catch limits in accordance with the harvest control rules established by the regional fisheries body. The move reflects growing concerns over declining saury stocks in the North Pacific, which have remained at historically low levels in recent years. Conservation measures are seen as essential to ensure the long-term sustainability of the fishery, which is economically important for several nations in the region including Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea.
